Former IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (26-1-1, 16KOs) is still hoping to lure Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26KOs) into the ring.
After his big decision win over former four division champion Adrien Broner last June, Porter was hoping to face Mayweather in September. That opportunity never came.
Mayweather took a pass on Porter and instead selected Andre Berto. The former five division champ dominated the fight and announced his retirement afterwards.
For the last few weeks, Mayweather has been hinting at the possibility of a ring return in the fall. There are also rumors that Mayweather will be ringside on June 25th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where Porter will challenge Keith Thurman (26-0, 22KOs) for the WBA welterweight championship.
If the opportunity arises, Porter is confident he has the style and the skills to beat Mayweather.
"I know that I have everything it takes to beat a great fighter like Floyd Mayweather. For me it’s just about the opportunity, and after that, it’s all up to me to take advantage of the opportunity. If he gives me the opportunity, I’m going for it," Porter told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
Thurman will be the first step in Porter's goal of unifying all of the world titles at welterweight. The current titleholders at welterweight include IBF champ Kell Brook, WBO champion Jessie Vargas, and WBC champion Danny Garcia. Brook, who holds a win over Porter, will face Vargas in a unification showdown in the summer.
"That’s the goal, that’s what I have to do. I don’t think you become champion to just call yourself a champion, it’s about conquering not just the guy who has the belt, but everyone else that stands in the way. Unifying titles and continuing on to try to establish my name as great one say is what I look forward to doing," Porter said.
