ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Daniel Geale and Darren Barker both came in at 159.5 pounds for their middleweight title fight that will air Saturday as the headline bout at Revel Atlantic City.
The bout pits two 160-pound fighters in an HBO main event at a time when the network has also been featuring middleweight champion Sergio Martinez and knockout sensation Gennady Golovkin.
Geale, who holds the International Boxing Federation’s belt, is coming off decision wins over Felix Sturm in September 2012 and Anthony Mundine this past January. The 32-year-old Australian from Mt. Annan, New South Wales, is 29-1 (15 knockouts). The lone loss came in his first fight with Mundine, back in 2009, a bout that saw him come up on the short end of a split decision.
Barker, 31, of London, is 25-1 with 16 knockouts. He was knocked out in the 11th round by Sergio Martinez in October 2011, bounced back with a fourth-round stoppage of Kerry Hope in December 2012 and then had a fourth-round technical knockout of Simone Rotolo this past March.
Junior featherweight titleholder Jhonatan Romero and challenger Kiko Martinez both came in at 121.5 pounds for their fight, which will air as the HBO co-feature.
Romero, 26, of Cali, Colombia, won the vacant IBF belt in February with a split decision win over Alejandro Lopez. He is 23-0 (12 KOs). Martinez, a 27-year-old Spaniard from Alicante, Comunidad Valenciana, is 28-4 (20 KOs), and is coming off a second-round stoppage of Damian Marchiano back in April.
Thomas Dulorme came in at 141 pounds while Francisco “Gato” Figueroa was 142 pounds for their fight, which will be shown on HBO Latino. Dulorme, 23, of Carolina, Puerto Rico, is 18-1 (13 KOs). Figueroa, 35, from the Bronx, N.Y., is 20-5-1 (13 KOs).
Yordenis Ugas was 140.5 pounds and had an hour to lose that extra half a pound, while his opponent, John “Spidey The Boxing Poet” Williams, was on-weight 138.5 pounds. Seriously, that’s Williams’ nickname. Ugas, a 27-year-old Cuban now fighting out of Miami, is 14-1 (7 KOs). Williams, 29, of Charlotte, N.C, is 11-2-1 (5 KOs).
Joel Brunker and Mike Oliver both came in at 125.5 pounds. Brunker, 27, of New South wales, Australia, is 26-0 (15 KOs). Oliver, 33, of Hartford, Conn., is 25-4 with 8 knockouts and 1 no contest and is coming off a majority decision loss to Billy Dib.
