During the last week of June, IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (34-3, 13KOs) signed a contract with manager/adviser Al Haymon, who handles the careers of at least 40 other fighters.
Haymon has been busy in 2014, signing up an army of fighters to his already beefed up stable. Some of his 2014 acquisitions include Adonis Stevenson, Amir Khan, Rances Barthelemy, Roberto Garcia, Andrew Fonfara, Abner Mares, Chad Dawson and several others.
Some fighters see Haymon as the man holding the key to big fights and big purses. Vazquez shares that viewpoint.
In his first fight with Haymon, Vazquez finds himself on the big stage, when he defends his title against Mickey Bey on pay-per-view undercard to the Floyd Mayweather-Marcos Maidana rematch. The card is scheduled for September 13th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Vazquez's participation on the card is not shocking, since Haymon works with just about every recognizable name on the card - including both Mayweather and Maidana.
"Besides it being an honor, it was a blessing to have signed with such an important figure in boxing like Mr. Al Haymon, and obviously the dreams of having the biggest fights have now become reality, and now come fight night I have to do everything to come out victorious so I don't let him down," Vazquez said.
Before Vazquez can reach those big fights, he must get past a very eager Mickey Bey (20-1-1, 10KOs).
"We know Mickey Bey is a very good fighter, very talented fighter, fast, difficult. But I know I'm very well prepared mentally, physically, spiritually. I know that I'm blessed. God blessed me, and we're prepared. We're prepared, and we're going to come out with the hand raised first, God willing," Vazquez said.
