BoxingScene.com reached out to Barry McGuigan earlier to try and shed some light on the rumoured February 27th showdown in Manchester between Carl Frampton (21-0, 14 KOs) and Scott Quigg (31-0-2, 23 KOs).
McGuigan, promoter and manager to the IBF world super bantamweight champion (Frampton), had this to say when we asked for some clarity on the situation.
It appears the two sides have agreed to the majority of the deal in principle, but no contracts have been signed by the two fighters.
“At this stage nothing has been signed, we are all working very hard to get this across the line,” he responded.
For his part, promoter Eddie Hearn gave the following:
"We've agreed the bulk of the deal," Hearn told Sky Sports. "We are now just finalizing a few minor points, but I am confident the fans will get the news they so desperately want next week."
"I've seen plenty of reports saying the deal has been done, but until the ink is dry a huge fight like this is never over the line. "I'm more confident than ever that this massive unification fight will take place early next year."
Quigg, the WBA ‘Regular’ champion has been out of action since July 18 after an impressive stoppage victory over former titlist Kiko Martinez. Joe Gallagher, Quigg’s trainer, told ‘Scene’s Ben Jacobs: “Quigg’s mentality is, ‘I just want to fight, I don’t care what they want, if they want 60 per cent, I don’t give two sh*ts. I’m knocking him out.”
