Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32KOs) will finally get the fight he's been pushing for on September 14th at the MGM Grand, when he challenges Danny Garcia (26-0, 16KOs) for the WBC/WBA junior welterweight titles. The main event will feature a junior middleweight battle between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
"I was promised this fight [with Garcia] a while ago. I was told after I beat Peterson that I could get Garcia, but there were so many hurdles. But finally we closed [the deal] and now we are going to fight on September 14," said Matthysse during a radio appearance in Argentina. "I have been training very well for twenty days or so, doing a good job, and now on Monday we are going to the lagoon at the Posada del Sol to concentrate until September."
"Every fight is a very good experience, you're learning more and strengthen further in the ring. After the work we have done in preparation I have grown [as a fighter], I have a lot of experience with the opponents who I've fought. The fight with Lamont [Peterson] was very good. He was one of the best in the division. It was a very good victory for me."
Danny Garcia his controversial father/trainer Angel Garcia have already been attacking Matthysse in the press, which he says might be attributed to fear. There has been talk of the Garcia-Matthysse winner getting a shot at Mayweather (44-0, 26KOs) in 2014 and that further motivates the Argentine puncher.
"I saw a few [of Garcia's] fights with Zab Judah and Erik Morales, and he was there when I fought [Lamont Peterson]. I'm going to train as strong as ever and I'm going out there to win the fight. He has faith in himself and so do I. But in [the ring] there is only going to be the two of us. I've always wanted to fight the best and now I will show what I can do and leave everything [in the ring]. I think Garcia is a little scared of me. He was there and saw my last fight. If I was ringside and saw my next opponent win in the type of fashion that I won, I would think twice [about fighting him] as well," Matthysse said.
"They've been talking [about me and Mayweather] since the fight with Peterson, and now they are saying that the winner between myself and Garcia could be Mayweather's next opponent. It motivates me even more and that is a good thing."
