September 14th managed to get a lot bigger when Danny Garcia vs. Lucas Matthysse was added to the bill as the support bout for the Floyd Mayweather vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez mega fight. Before the fight was finalized, there were doubts it would even get made as things seemed to be taking unusually long to get sorted out.
Lucas Matthysse gave an exclusive interview to BoxingScene Radio as he discussed a variety of topics including why the fight took so long to get finalized.
“From what my promoter told me is they didn't want to sign. They asked for a lot of requirements to make the fight like doing surprise anti-doping testing here [in Argentina]. And also a ton of other things and I accepted them because I train here. So I told them yes because I had no problem [with it]. I’m not taking anything illegal. I do the same training. They were asking for a lot of things but I said yes and hopefully everything comes out good,” Matthysse would tell BoxingScene Radio.
The fighters who sign up to fight Danny Garica soon find out they have to fight a separate battle outside the ring with Garcia’s father and trainer Angel Garcia. Angel is outspoken and can trash talk as guys like Amir Khan and Zab Judah had to endure it leading up to their fights with Danny. Matthysse already got a taste of it as Angel spoke to Lem Satterfield and said Matthysse would be an easy fight and questioned Matthysse’s opposition.
Lucas was asked what his thoughts and reactions were to Angel Garcia’s early verbal jabs.
“Yes, I've seen on the internet the things that he's said but honestly it doesn't do anything to me. Up in the ring it’s going to be me and his son and there we will really see everything,” said Matthysse.
“I know who I am and with who I've fought. And if he beats me, I'll go and shake his hand because I asked to fight the best and he's the best. So if he beats me I will shake his hand and congratulate him but I have a lot of confidence and know I will beat him. I know I'm going to beat him so his father can keep talking but in the end it’s only going to be me and Danny Garcia in the ring”.
Matthysse said he has begun training in Argentina and will begin sparring next week in preparation for the biggest fight of his career. A press tour for the fight will also be taking place soon as Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer advised they will have stops in Puerto Rico, New York and Los Angeles.
