Matty Askin’s Commonwealth and British cruiserweight challenge to Ovill McKenzie has been rescheduled. Queensberry Promotions confirmed the news to BoxingScene earlier today.
The fight was due to take at the Kingsway Leisure Centre, Widnes on Saturday night, but it has been moved to Frank Warren’s March 27 show at London’s York Hall.
Askin, 17-2 (10), earned his shot by beating Menay Edwards by ninth-round TKO in March to pick up the English title. His two defeats came against Jon-Lewis Dickinson (L10 for the English belt in 2012) and Krzysztof Glowacki (L KO 11 for the WBO Inter-Continental belt in the same year). Since that defeat, he has registered three straight wins and was confident of victory against the man dubbed “The Upsetter”.
McKenzie bounced back from an 11-round TKO against Enzo Maccarinelli in 2013, at lightweight, to beat Tony Conquest for the Cruiserweight Commonwealth belt last April (W KO 5). A second-round TKO win against Dickinson in June earned him the British belt, this was to be his first defence of both titles. The 35-year-old has a 23-12 (12) record, but a lot of his defeats have come at title level and he would have presented Askin with arguably his toughest test to date.
Maccarinelli was also due to fight on the Widnes bill, he will now feature on Steve Woods’s VIP show at the Victoria Warehouse in Manchester on Saturday night. Opponent TBA.
