In what was the best fight of last weekend, Rocky Martinez wrested the WBO 130-pound title from Orlando Salido in front of his Puerto Rican partisans in San Juan in what was a spirited battle. Now the focus is on doing it again. Salido has openly talked about it and the opposing side seems to have no objections.
But there is the issue of one Francisco Vargas, who is rated number one by the sanctioning body and was clamoring for the winner of this match-up. It's not clear though if Martinez has any mandatory obligations.
"We will have some meetings this week, we'll meet with 'Paco' Valcarcel (the president of the WBO) to see what the situation is with the 130-pound division. If we need to go to a mandatory fight that's no problem," BoxingScene was told by Peter Rivera, who promotes Martinez.
"We just want to make the best business possible, we'll talk to the Zanfer people again to see if they want to do something again because they gave us the opportunity. So let's see what happens and we'll have some information in the next few days," added Rivera.
The plan is for this rematch to take place somewhere in the west coast - perhaps at a venue like StubHub Center - and to pair it with a fight that would allow it to be showcased on a platform such as HBO. This event was a pay-per-view and there were some problems with distribution as DirecTV backed out of the fight.
