As previously reported, Marcos "Chino" Maidana may enter the junior middleweight division upon his return in 2016.
Maidana, who captured world titles at junior welterweight and welterweight, is considering the idea of moving up in weight to pursue history. In winning a world title at 154-pounds, Maidana would become the first boxer in the history of Argentina to capture major belts in three weight divisions.
Maidana has been out of the ring since last September, when he lost a twelve round unanimous decision to Floyd Mayweather Jr.
A move to 154 will certainly be considered when Maidana goes over his future options at the end of the year. Maidana is not going to move up and fight anybody at 154. It will have to be the right opponent, likely with a world title at stake.
Maidana is under the Al Haymon/Premier Boxing Champions banner. Haymon has three world champions at 154, WBA 'regular' beltholder Erislandy Lara, IBF champion Jermall Charlo and the recently retired WBC champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.
"Before the end of the year I'll sit down with Chino to evaluate the possibilities that we have for next year. Obviously the final word about the future lies with Chino. Actually, we all know that Maidana is a welterweight. But [a move to 154 is being considered] simply on the idea of being able to try to make great history and become the first Argentine to win titles in three different divisions, but that will depend on the potential opponents we would have in making the attempt at 154 pounds," his adviser Sebastian Contursi told ESPN Deportes.
