According to multiple outlets in Argentina, there is a good possibility that Marcos "El Chino" Maidana (35-5, 31KOs) will return in 2016 at the junior middleweight limit of 154-pounds.
Maidana has been out of the ring since facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a rematch last September in Las Vegas. He made a lot of money last year, in facing Mayweather twice on Showtime Pay-Per-View.
During his extended layoff, he put on a lot of weight. His trainer Robert Garcia suggested that it would take as long as two months or more to get him completely down in weight and in top physical condition.
In June of this year, Maidana stated that a move to junior middleweight would be too much for him - when he was asked if he would be willing to face Miguel Cotto or Saul Alvarez at a catch-weight of 154.
"No, they are too heavy for me. If I fight, I'm going to fight in my division. They are from another division. They are too big for me. I'll stay at welterweight," Maidana said.
According to reports in Argentina, citing his adviser Sebastian Contursi, Maidana might consider moving up when he returns and the motivation would be history.
Maidana is a former champion at 140 and 147. If he were to win a world title at 154, he would become the first boxer from his country to win world titles in three divisions.
