The return of former champion Marcos 'Chino' Maidana (35-5, 31KOs) is looking very unlikely this year. Maidana has been out of the ring for over a year. Last September he lost a twelve round decision in his rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Maidana has been relaxing and spending time with his family in Argentina. There was some discussion of Maidana coming back before the end of the year, but the fighter has gained a lot of weight during his inactivity and it will require several months of tough training to burn it off. Not that September is coming to an end, scheduling a fight before the end of year looks unlikely.
He has no shortage of opponents. Keith Thurman, Amir Khan, Shawn Porter and Adrien Broner have all mentioned his name as a target.
His manager, Sebastian Contursi, told Javier Mariani:
"Maidana has trained very lightly, which can not be considered as training for a fight. We are already in September, with nothing concrete," Contursi said. "The doors are always open for Chino to fight again in the United States, but it depends on him. When he feels ready, he will let us know and we will work to get him the best opponent. We do not try to convince him to come back, it's a personal decision."
