WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7KOs) is just ten days away from defending his title against Adrien Broner (26-0, 22KOs) on June 22nd at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. So far neither man has been at a loss for words in the expletive filled lead up to fight. While visiting with us on BoxingScene Radio, Malignaggi said that Broner's team made a big mistake in picking him as their next opponent.
"He's gonna get his ass beat in a week and a half. He's going to get his ass beat so bad that he will wish he never put his boxing gloves on. His team will wish they never made the fight," Malignaggi said.
The Brooklyn, NY native said that he is having one of his best training camps and that when his camps are this good that his opponents are in a lot of trouble.
He struggled in his October victory over Pablo Cano but revealed that he wasn't able to get his normal sparring in for that training camp due to a cut he suffered. He also said that he broke his thumb in the fight and said that this training camp has gone a lot smoother.
"I know that when I have this type of training camp my opponents are in trouble. I need 120-130 rounds of sparring to be sharp. We all know how my fight (against Cano) went but what people don't know is I just sparred 68 rounds because I got cut in camp and I also broke my right thumb in the fight and yet I still won the fight," Malignaggi explained.
Some people felt that Cano had done enough to win the fight but Malignaggi said that at a minimum he won the fight by a point.
"Take out the Compubox bullsh*t and it's plain to see I won the fight. It was an easy fight to score. He came on at the end but at worst I won the fight 114-113 which was the score on two scorecards. One judge even admitted at the WBA convention that he let the crowd affect him," Malignaggi told BoxingScene Radio.
Malignaggi-Broner will be televised by Showtime.
