Last week, the World Boxing Association (WBA) ordered the immediate negotiations for the completion of a mandatory defense by WBA super flyweight world champion Kohei Kono (30-8, 13KOs) against Koki Kameda (32-1, 17KOs). According to WBA rules, Kono has to defend his title within 120 days and must face Kameda by July 25.
Watanabe Promotions and Kameda Promotions have until the 28th of May to reach an agreement or the fight will head to a purse bid.
According to Nicaraguan agent Ricardo Rizzo, a representative of Kameda Promotions, an agreement is coming soon.
"We are already talking and we believe something concrete will happen very soon, without having to go to a purse bid. I think this fight will be taking place in late June or July," Rizzo said.
Kameda has won titles at junior flyweight, flyweight and bantamweight. Now he gets the chance to become the first boxer in Japan to win four titles in four weight divisions.
