Edinburgh’s Kenny Anderson was left kicking his heels when George Groves withdrew for their March 16 British super middleweight title showdown at London’s Wembley Arena. The long awaited rematch to their November 2010 FOTY candidate, in which Groves rallied from a knockdown in the third to stop Anderson in the sixth, was KO’d when Groves’s picked up a back injury in training.
Anderson, 15-1 (11), reacted furiously to the postponement, telling Boxingscene.com that his next opponent would bear the brunt of his frustration. Sheffield’s Wayne Reed has been given the unenviable task of facing the 29-year-old at Edinburgh’s Meadow Bank Sports Centre on April 14. Kevin Maree, who trains Anderson, vowed to help get his man a fight in order to ensure that their gruelling training camp was not in vain; Maree contacted me earlier today to reveal the date, venue and opponent. Former WBO super featherweight titlist Alex Arthur headlines and promotes the bill as he continues his low-key comeback.
Reed, 8-4 (3), dropped a six-round decision to Eamonn O'Kane on the undercard of Kell Brook’s win over Matthew Hatton on March 17, he was stopped in four by former WBC 168lb title holder Robin Reid in June – the 24-year-old faces a tough night’s work come April 14.
