Two-division world champion Jhonny Gonzalez (57-9, 48KOs) is looking to return to the ring on a date in the month of August or September in Mexico City or Los Angeles, in the super featherweight division. He wants to get a world title shot as soon as possible and plans to sit down with his promoter, Promociones del Pueblo, to go over the details.
Gonzalez was last in the ring in March, losing his WBC featherweight title, when he was easily knocked out in four rounds by the quick handed Gary Russell Jr.
He is going to start training for the fight at the end of June. Gonzalez's coach is Hall of Fame trainer Nacho Beristain.
"We're ready to return to the gym at the end of June to the gym. The only thing I can assume right now is that I'm going to super featherweight to try to win my third title in a different division and for this we will try to get it done in August or September at the latest," Gonzalez said to ESPN Deportes.
"I think it is a necessary change, beyond looking to become a triple world champion - my body has started to ask me to move up. I want a shot at any champion who will give me the opportunity."
