According to Mexican promoter Osvaldo Kuchle, former world champion Jhonny Gonzalez will be back in action on April 2 against Japanese contender Kosuke Saka, tentatively in Acapulco, Guerrero.
Gonzalez has not stepped in the ring since last December, when he defeated another Japanese fighter Hurricane Futa on points in Los Mochis, Sinaloa.
"Jhonny will fight on April 2 against this fighter named Saka, he is a Japanese. We still have no venue, but it will be in Acapulco, Guerrero," said Küchle to ESPN Deportes.
Saka (12-3, 9KOs) has won his last four bouts by knockout.
Gonzalez (59-10, 49KOs) has had a lot of ups and downs in his career and especially in 2015.
He was knocked out in four rounds, losing his WBC featherweight championship in four rounds to Gary Russell Jr. in March. He moved up to super featherweight and stopped Kazuki Hasimoto of Japan in two rounds.
Gonzalez then returned on September 12th, as part of the Floyd Mayweather-Andre Berto Showtime Pay-Per-View undercard and lost a twelve round majority decision to Jonathan Oquendo of Puerto Rico. Then came the fight against Futa, which Gonzalez won with a twelve round unanimous decision.
In recent weeks, the former champion's name has been mentioned as a potential opponent for WBC super featherweight champion Francisco Vargas and the winner of the upcoming fight between WBO champion Rocky Martinez and Miguel Berchelt.
