With his upset knockout victory over previously undefeated Javier Fortuna this past Friday in China, Jason Sosa (19-1-4, 15KOs) now holds a version of the WBA 130-pound title (Jezreel Corrales is the other belt-holder for the organization). His promoter, Russell Peltz, would like to see his man face the marquee names in the division.
One fight Peltz would love to make is a unification with WBC world champion Francisco Vargas, who earlier this month participated in a Fight of The Year war with Orlando Salido which ended in a draw.
"What I'd like to see happen, I'd like to fight Francisco Vargas, I don't want ot be pushed into fighting Corrales to clear up the WBA title because I don't think there's any money in the fight," said Peltz, bluntly to BoxingScene.com.
It's still not clear when the WBA will mandate the fight with Corrales, who won his WBA belt on April 27th in Japan by stopping Takashi Uchiyama in two rounds.
"Nobody has informed me - or told me before - that that would have to be," explained Peltz, who now has his first champion in eleven years. "There's some talk of it now but Sosa wants to fight the best guys for the most money and I would fight (Vasyl) Lomachenko in a couple of fights. But I don't want to just fight no-name guys because they've got a belt. I'd love to fight (Orlando) Salido in a heartbeat, guys that come to fight.
"Anybody that comes to fight."
To make the Fortuna fight a reality, Peltz had to give three options to Sampson Lewkowicz. Coming into last weeks bout, it was Peltz's understanding that they were obligated to face Corrales.
"It's a nothing fight, I don't even know who the guy is. He's another left-hander and it's another fight that's not going to be on American television, I'm sure. Vargas, Salido, guys like that - those are the fights,''stated Peltz.
