Hosea Burton is not likely to return to the ring until the new season.
The former British light-heavyweight champion has been out since February.
Burton, 29, had been set to snap his hiatus on June 16 in Newcastle, exclusively live on Sky Sports.
But the man who won the ABAs at middleweight as an amateur was ruled out of his appearance at the Metro Radio Arena at the 11th-hour with a rib injury.
He watched on TV recently as his 175-pound rival Anthony Yarde stopped Polish southpaw Dariusz Sek, kept up his undefeated ledger and moved to 16-0 with 15 early as he retained his WBO European and Inter-Continental straps, and was far from impressed.
“Anthony Yarde is useless,” he wrote on Twitter. “Why people think he’s good is beyond me. I’d knock him out inside five rounds.”
But Boxing Scene understands that Burton will sit out until the new season and is in pole position to claim a spot on the first Matchroom Boxing USA card.
Eddie Hearn will head to a venue to be determined in New York on September 22, with UK fight fans able to watch the card on Sky Sports.
And Burton is likely to box alongside Joshua Buatsi on the bill.
Hearn has also mentioned potentially taking North East duo Josh Kelly and Lewis Ritson Stateside next, while Katie Taylor is expected to feature on the bill, provided she comes through her July 28 WBA and IBF female lightweight title defences against Kimberly Connor at the O2 Arena in London, exclusively live on Sky Sports Box Office, as part of the supporting cast to Dillian Whyte's crunch heavyweight clash against Joseph Parker.
Further details regarding the card will be revealed in due course.
