Abel Sanchez, trainer of IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (30-0, 27KOs), would like to see an opponent extend him fighter into the championship rounds.
Sanchez sees the pros and the cons of Golovkin's power punching success, where most opponents are taken out in the first six rounds. But when Golovkin faces some of the more talented, especially in the higher weights, he will need the experience of being able to go twelve hard rounds.
Later tonight at the StubHub Center in Carson, Golovkin will face Marco Antonio Rubio.
"The knockout streak is important to you guys in the media. It's not as important to us, because I need rounds. We've never been more than ten, and if we fight a [Andre] Ward or a [Julio Cesar] Chavez [or someone] like that, those bigger guys - we may have to go twelve. If we have to do that and we don't have the experience, what is it going to be like?," Sanchez told BoxingScene.com
"As a coach, I would like for him to get some rounds. I'm not going to ask him to do that. If the knockout is there, I would rather him do that. That's the detriment of being a power puncher, is that you're not going to get the experience that other guys have."
