Gennady Golovkin and Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez fought before a sold-out crowd in their last fight.
All indications are both will likely fight again in front of a packed house.
About 14,500 tickets have been sold so far for the April 23 card at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif., K2 Promotions’ Managing Director Tom Loeffler told Boxingscene.com late Saturday night.
“There’s about 3,000 tickets for sale with (less than) two weeks until the event,” said Loeffler.
Golovkin and Gonzalez fought before a crowd of over 20,500 at Madison Square Garden in New York City on October 17.
Golovkin stopped David Lemieux in round eight in a middleweight unification title bout and Gonzalez stopped Brian Viloria in round 10 to defend his WBC flyweight title.
Both fighters fought in separate bouts on May 16 of last year. Golovkin stopped Willie Monroe in the sixth round, while Gonzalez overwhelmed Edgar Sosa in stopping in the the second round.
On that card, The Forum was scaled down to accommodate about 12,500 fans. The official attendance was 12,372.
"Because of the high ticket demand for April 23, we opened the entire arena," said Loeffler. "For the May 17 fight, three thousand tickets were sold in the week leading up to the fight, so we're confident all remaining tickets will be sold in these final two weeks."
Loeffler did say the April 23 card may be the last time Golovkin and Gonzalez would co-headline a fight card.
With the recent retirements of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, who defeated Timothy Bradley on Saturday, Loeffler stated K2 Promotions would venture in having Golovkin headline a card in Las Vegas.
"Vegas is definitely in the plans against the right opponent."
