George Groves and Callum Smith still don’t have a date for their world title showdown.
The pair will meet for the former’s WBA Super world super-middleweight title in a clash that will double up as the final of the World Boxing Super Series.
Groves (28-3, 20 KOs) and Smith have each won two fights to get to the showpiece of the Muhammad Ali Trophy competition.
And it has long been set to take place outside of the UK, potentially in Saudi Arabia, with an official announcement to come this week.
The London Evening Standard reported on Tuesday that the fight would take place on September 29 at King Abdullah Sports City stadium and arena complex north of the Saudi city of Jeddah.
But Boxing Scene has been told that the fight will happen on a Friday, should it happen in Saudi Arabia, so none of the dates previously mentioned would fit.
Both participants have indicated to Scene that they were preparing for a date early in September, with Amir Khan set to fight on September 8 in Birmingham, Frank Warren heading to the O2 Arena in London on September 15 and Anthony Joshua defending his IBF, IBO, WBA and WBO world heavyweight titles against mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin on September 22 at Wembley Stadium in London, but it seems neither has any sort of clue as to what date the fight will happen.
“If it’s Jeddah, it would be a Friday,” a source with knowledge of the fight particulars told Boxing Scene. “I have not heard anything about [the reported date of] September 29.”
Further details will be revealed in due course.
