Abel Sanchez, the trainer of IBO/WBA "regular" middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (23-0, 20KOs), wants his boxer to make a statement on Saturday night against EBU king Grzegorz Proksa (28-1, 21KOs) at Turning Stone Casino in Verona, New York.
Both Golovkin and Proksa will make their debuts on HBO. Sanchez indicates that Golovkin understands that he needs to make a real impression to return to the network in the near future. Proksa is a replacement for WBO champion Dmitry Pirog, who withdrew with an injury a few weeks ago.
"[Golovkin is] a big puncher, so we needed to initiate and he understands he needs to initiate where in the past in some of the earlier fights that he had, he was sitting back waiting to counter punch. We need to be the aggressor. We need to make sure they understand who they’re in there with. Not to make it a long, drag-out boring fight – to make it a fight - to make the public want to see him again. He understands that completely," Sanchez said.
"He understands the American public wants to see a knock-out. Whichever round it is, they want to see a knock-out. That’s one of the things that was very important to make him understand the quicker the better. He’s going to get paid the same whether it’s one round or 12 rounds."
