Earlier this week, Marcos Maidana (35-5, 31KOs) announced his retirement from boxing via social media. Maidana last fought in September of 2014, where he lost his rematch to Floyd Mayweather.
This development did not surprise his trainer, Robert Garcia.
"Not at all, it's two years he's been off. He never announced it but I kind of figured he wouldn't fight again," Garcia told BoxingScene.com.
"But the last couple of weeks when he came to the United States there was some word from people that he might return but I never heard it from him or even talked about it. We just talked about,'hi, how you been, how's everything going?' - but nothing to do with boxing. He never mentioned it to me. Now that I hear it, it doesn't really surprise me."
Maidana had a colorful and entertaining career that saw him take on the likes of Victor Ortiz, Amir Khan, Adrien Broner, Josesito Lopez, Jesus Soto-Karass, Erik Morales and Mayweather twice. He ends his career( for now) with a mark of 35-5(31 KO's).
When asked if he ever envisions Maidana returning to the ring, Garcia answers, "He wouldn't do it unless it's a big fight for a big payday. That's not coming from him, that's coming from me."
