Retired former world champion Carl Froch believes David Haye (26-2, 24KOs) is coming back to the sport at the right moment.
Haye returns on January 16th in his first fight since the knockout of Dereck Chisora in July of 2012. He takes on hard puncher Mark De Mori (30-1-2, 26KOs) at the O2 Arena in London.
A series of injuries, and shoulder surgery, kept him on the shelf.
The former two-division champion returns to a changed division with several major fights in his own backyard.
The new king of the heavyweight division is WBO/WBA/IBO champion Tyson Fury, who knocked off Wladimir Klitschko with a twelve round decision last month. Olympic gold medal winner Anthony Joshua is viewed as the biggest rising star at the weight.
Haye vs. Fury or Joshua is a huge event on UK soil. Haye vs. WBC champion Deontay Wilder is also a significant fight. Haye used Wilder as a sparring partner for a canceled fight with Tyson Fury in 2013.
"David is a good friend of mine and I'm excited to see him back after a long absence because of a shoulder injury. He'll certainly need a few warm up fights given the time he has spent out of the ring. But he comes back at a time with Tyson Fury the new world champion," Froch told the Nottingham Post.
"You've got Anthony Joshua who ended up knocking out Dillian Whyte in their clash. There's WBC holder Deontay Wilder obviously. And now Haye is back from his absence, it really livens up the division up which, let's be honest, has been very poor in terms of entertainment in recent years. I think it is going to take some time before it can rival the period when Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis were around."
