Golden Boy Promotions is planning the 2016 debut of Frankie Gomez (19-0, 13KOs) on February 5th at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California. And they have a fight in mind for 'the Pitbull' - veteran Hank Lundy.
Robert Diaz, matchmaker for GBP explained to BoxingScene.com - "With Frankie the talent is there, we believe in Frankie. The fight with Humberto Soto was going to be a very tough test, obviously for the reasons we all know it didn't happen, but we can't sit back and wait."
On May 9th at the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, Gomez was scheduled to face Soto but came nowhere near the 140-pound weight limit and that fight was scrapped. It was a huge opportunity for Gomez to fight in front of a large throng of fans who were coming out to see Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, who was making his HBO return against James Kirkland.
In his last fight on October 23rd, Gomez had problems again at the scales as the weight limit for his about against Jorge Silva was moved up a few pounds the day of the weigh-in. But GBP is moving forward and it's clear that they would like to do so at a quick pace.
"Frankie should be fighting for a world title by the end of the next year," said Diaz."The only way to get there is move him quickly in the rankings, get him ranked and push for a world title. This kid has a world of talent, has a world of experience. There's obviously some difficulties that he's run through in the past and we're going to try and get through them."
Diaz says that scheduling him early in 2016 will force him to work through the holidays. The Golden Boy brass plans to bring Gomez into the offices shortly after the New Years to check his weight. The planned weight limit for Gomez-Lundy, should it come to fruition, is 144 pounds.
