Brooklyn, New York - One could argue that not many fighters had a better 2015 than light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara (28-3, 16KOs).
In April, he scored an upset win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. with a ninth round knockout. And then he came back in October in a 'Fight of The Year' contender with Nathan Cleverly - which saw the Polish fighter withstand a high impact pace to pull off the win. He sees 2016 as being an even better year for his career.
“2015 was a great year for me, a win with Chavez and a good fight with Cleverly,” Fonfara told BoxingScene.com “2016 will be better fights for me with better fighters. I think my next fight will be a championship fight. I don’t know exactly win but we should know real soon. Maybe I sign a contract for April or May.”
If Fonfara had his way, his next fight would be a rematch against the WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson.
“I want the rematch,” Fonfara said. “I said after both fights last year that I wanted a Stevenson rematch to its time for the rematch, I’m ready. I think I’m a better fighter. I fought Chavez and Cleverly and he fought (Tommy) Karpency. I’m a more experience fighter since the first fight. I want to be the first to knock out Stevenson.
As far as the rest of the division, he feels Andre Ward is a very good addition to an already loaded weight class.
“I think it’s good for him,” Fonfara said of Ward joining the 175 pound ranks. “There’s a lot better fighters and more active fighters. It’s good for light heavyweights because he’s a good fighter and we have a lot of good fighters here.”
In terms of breaking down a potential November fight between Ward and WBO/IBF/WBA champion Sergey Kovalev - Fonfara said, “Two guys are very good fighters. Its 50-50.”
However between Kovalev and Stevenson, Fonfara had a one word answer - Kovalev”
