A great fight with a sad ending. Eric Molina (25-3, 19 KOs) ended the long career of former light heavyweight and cruiserweight world champion Tomasza Adamek (50-5, 30 KOs) on Saturday night in Krakow, Poland.
Adamek was ahead in the fight and boxing very well, but seemed to get hurt several times during the fight when the much larger Molina would connect clean.
The Polish star's luck ran out with a few seconds left in the tenth round, when Molina timed him and landed a crushing right hand. Adamek went down and struggled to get to his feet. He was unable to beat the count of ten and the fight was waved off.
After the fight, Adamek announced his retirement from the sport.
"I lost, so I'm going to end my career. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Thank you to everyone for cheering. He won, but this is boxing," Adamek.
Molina, who last year was knocked out by WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder in an entertaining fight, is looking ahead to bigger and better things.
He wants to face the winner of next Saturday's showdown between IBF heavyweight champion Charles Martin and Olympic gold medal winner Anthony Joshua, which takes place at the O2 Arena in London.
"Hats off to Adamek. I am a teacher, so I'm always learning from my mistakes. Each day I'm getting better and I had a lot of time to prepare for this fight. Adamek was boxing great, but the difference today was my power. I knew that sooner or later my power would get to him. Right now I'm going to talk with my promoter Don King because I only want the big fights. I am not afraid of any challenges or any fights in another country. I want to fight the winner of Anthony Joshua and Charles Martin," Molina said.
