Light heavyweight contender Edwin Rodríguez (28-1, 19 KOs) has revealed to BoxingScene.com that he could face fellow contender Thomas Williams (19-1, 13 KOs) in the next few months.
Both men fought on the same card on November 13 in Mississippi with their respective fights providing fireworks, both fight of the year candidates according to most observers.
Rodríguez exchanged knockdowns with previously unbeaten Michael Seals in a thrilling bout which Edwin ended in the third round while Williams stopped Umberto Savigne in two in another knockdowns galore encounter.
“I don’t have an exact date yet for my next fight, but we’re looking at Thomas Williams,” Rodríguez divulged.
“I heard he wants to fight me so, let’s do it! I’m waiting on Al [Haymon] to put things together so hopefully it gets made.
“I think a fighting a fighter like Thomas early on in the year will be beneficial to me because he is a lefty and I want to fight Adonis Stevenson. I haven’t fought a lefty in a little while. Thomas is a good fighter and he has some similarities to Stevenson - he’s a lefty and can punch. If I can’t beat him though I don’t deserve Stevenson. We fought on the same card last time and everyone was getting knocked down!”
While there is currently no formal offer, Edwin detailed his desire to arrange this match-up which given the styles of both boxers, and punching power, would make it unlikely that anyone would want their money back after seeing it.
“There’s talks about it, last time I heard he wanted it as well. In the next couple of days let’s see if we can get it secured. There has been no formal offer but I was asked if I wanted this fight.”
