Rising super middleweight contender Edwin "La Bomba" Rodriguez (24-0) stopped by this week's edition of BoxingScene Radio to talk to us about his July 13th first round destruction of Denis Grachev in Monte Carlo. Many insiders had given the normally durable Grachev a good chance at pulling off the upset but Rodriguez instead managed to increase his stock dramatically with the quick knockout.
The 28-year-old said that he made some changes to this training camp and credited his team for helping him secure the victory.
"We made a lot of changes. I went to Houston to train with Ronnie Shields for this fight. I also went to San Francisco for two weeks to work with Victor Conte. I have worked with him for 4-5 fights but this was the first time I went to California. We worked on high altitude training and it really helped with recovery in the fight," Rodriguez explained.
Rodriguez came out very aggressively in this fight. He said that world class trainer Ronnie Shields has really worked on fine tuning his defense during their training camps but he also showed that he is capable of being an offensive force as well.
"Ronnie has brought out the defense in me. I showed that I can be defensive minded and also show my offense as well. (In addition to the Grachev fight) You also saw it in the Jason Escalera fight," Rodriguez told BoxingScene Radio.
La Bomba has fought twice in 2013 with both fights taking place in Monte Carlo as a participant in the Million Dollar Tournament that he won. He said that plans are underway to solidify his next fight which should be in the United States and televised by HBO.
"I want to be back as soon as possible. I think I got hit with one jab in that fight (laughing) so I'm ready to go. I am going to meet with my promoter Lou DiBella next week to talk about it," said Rodriguez who his hoping to secure a title shot soon. "I think it is time for me to fight for a world title. I want to be back on HBO in front of my US fans."
