As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, a deal to match bantamweight king Nonito Donaire and former WBO super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. is imminent. The fight will be Donaire's first at the 122 pound limit. The fighter known as the Filipino Flash struggled to get down to 118 pounds in his previous fight versus Omar Narvaez and later revealed that he was only at 60-70% of his capacity in the fight.
Donaire's trainer Robert Garcia feels that Vazquez is a great match up stylistically for Donaire. After facing Narvaez who went into survival mode early, Garcia said that Vazquez will be a welcome change.
"Narvaez just wanted to survive. He is very defensive and didn't want to fight. We know that Vazquez will come to fight," said Garcia.
Vazquez has one loss on his resume and that was to four division champion Jorge Arce. Garcia downplayed the loss saying that there is no shame in losing to a great fighter like Arce.
"Arce is a warrior and whoever fights him is going to have a tough time with him. He isn't an easy fight for anyone."
Garcia has been in Mexico training Antonio Margarito and Brandon Rios for their upcoming fights that take place on December 3rd in New York. For that reason he has been out of the loop as far as negotiations have gone.
"I talked to (Donaire's manager) Cameron (Dunkin) a couple times. I've been in Mexico but it looks like it is going to happen. Vazquez is perfect for Nonito. One thing about Vazquez is that he can bang and he has pop. It should be a good action fight," Garcia told BoxingScene.com
