Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya views James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) as a very dangerous opponent for Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs). As BoxingScene.com reported on Friday, a deal was finalized for a likely date of May 2nd from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
The two boxers were first scheduled to fight each other in the fall of 2012, and then Kirkland withdrew with an injury and was later replaced by Josesito Lopez.
"It's a fight that people have been waiting for. Canelo asked for Kirkland and Kirkland wanted to fight Canelo. Styles make fights and I have no doubt it will be one of the best [fights] of the year," De La Hoya told ESPN Deportes.
"It's a dangerous fight, but he requested Kirkland, who is a train that comes right at you looking to finish you, but Canelo not only has power - he has speed and he can boxing, so it will certainly be a great fight on HBO."
