Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya suffered a big hit to his company when the year started. The majority of his fighters left Golden Boy to get involved with the Premier Boxing Champions [PBC] series. Nearly all of those fighters were managed/advised by Al Haymon, who started PBC.
As the year continued, two De La Hoya's biggest names - Lucas Matthysse and David Lemieux - suffered knockout defeats in the respective title fights.
On Saturday night in Las Vegas, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (46-1-1, 32KOs) catapulted Golden Boy's standing with a twelve round unanimous decision over Miguel Cotto to capture the WBC middleweight championship.
De La Hoya's company now promotes the fighter who has to be considered the number one star in the United States. Canelo, at only 25-years-old, will be around for a long time.
Based on the information that he's received, De La Hoya strongly feels that Canelo's HBO Pay-Per-View with Cotto is going to generate 1 million buys.
"I'm curious to see what the numbers are going to be. I strongly feel that we're hitting the million mark. I strongly feel that. All indications, all the numbers [that we're getting] are leading us to believe that. The bottom line is - we have the guy. We have the guy for many years to come. It really is going to be a lot of fun putting together some great fights [for Canelo]," De La Hoya said.
