Glen "Jersey Boy" Tapia (23-2) will make the move from the super welterweight division up to the middleweight division on May 7th to face former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux on the Canelo Alvarez-Amir Khan pay-per-view undercard. The fight card will be the first boxing event at the new T-Mobile Arena on the Las Vegas strip.
The 27-year-old Lemieux knows very well how hard it can be to make weight. Especially after missing weight before his planned March return which led to his bout against James De La Rosa getting cancelled.
That knowledge leads Lemieux to believe he is going to face the best possible version of Glen Tapia on fight night.
"Well I know what it is to cut weight and he knows his body better than anyone else. I am sure he will feel better at 160 after trying to make 154. I am expecting a well prepared Tapia, a very strong Tapia. I will be prepared for him," Lemieux told BoxingScene.com.
A win over Tapia would put Lemieux back in title contention. Being that Lemieux and Alvarez are both promoted by Golden Boy, a future showdown could be a very lucrative bout.
Lemieux refused to look that far ahead and speculate and insists that all of his focus is on Tapia and May 7th.
"I am not concentrating on that. I know if we do a great performance (against Tapia) then we will be open for anything else.
"(I want to tell the fans to) keep your eyes open. For those that haven't seen me, I am going in there and I'm going to give a great show for the fans," said Lemieux.
