Last night WBA interim welterweight champion David Avanesyan (22-1-1, 11KOs) retained his title with an unanimous decision victory over former three division champion Shane Mosley, who is likely going to retire following the loss. The bout took place in Glendale, Ariz and was televised by CBS Sports Network.
A few weeks prior to the fight, WBA President Gilberto Mendoza Jr announced that the Mosley-Avanesyan winner would have to face the winner of the fight between WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman and challenger Shawn Porter. The WBA is in the process of consolidating their belts so that they only have one champion per division.
Avanesyan's promoter Neil Marsh of K1 Promotions confirmed that the winner of that fight is the direction they will head in.
After numerous delays, Thurman vs. Porter will finally take place on June 25th from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
"David will be ringside in Brooklyn on June 25th to watch Thurman-Porter," said Marsh.
The Armenian's trainer Carl Greaves said that Porter's style probably fits Avanesyan's counterattacking style better but that they would be ready for either fighter.
"It's a good fight. They are both good fighters. Porter, the way he comes at you, probably fits David's style better. Thurman moved more and has that KO power but we will be ready for either one of them," said Greaves.
