Driffield’s Curtis Woodhouse has revealed that he cannot resist the urge to defend his British light-welterweight title and has therefore decided to put his retirement plans on ice. Woodhouse had pledge to walk away after fighting Darren Hamilton for the belt, but has opted to fight on in the wake of his split decision win over the Bristolian.
Woodhouse was already having second thoughts when BoxingScene spoke to him on the Monday after the contest, he today took to Twitter to confirm that these second thoughts have become increasingly hard to ignore.
‘Just to let you all know, I’ve decided that I’m going to carry on fighting,’ tweeted Woodhouse, 22-6 (13). ‘I’ve still got the fire and the hunger so it’s not time to go. I would always be asking myself what might have been, if I walked away now. I’m hoping [promoter] Dave Coldwell can make a few more big nights for me.’
The former footballer’s long-term dream was to win the British title. Once this dream was accomplished the lure of defending the Lonsdale belt was always going to be hard to resist. Today’s news means that the 33-year-old will have a queue of challengers to choose from when the time comes to cement his next move.
