Capturing a fourth world title by moving up to the middleweight division might be on the agenda of Miguel Cotto, the current champion of the WBA at junior middleweight. Miguel Cotto, who on December 3 will defend his crown against Mexican Antonio Margarito in either Madison Square Garden in New York or Las Vegas.
"Right now it is not our first choice but it would gives us great pride to accomplish," Cotto added.
To achieve that feat, winning the middleweight championship, Cotto would become the first Puerto Rican to win titles in four different divisions. There has been talk of Cotto facing WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., also promoted by Top Rank, in 2012.
During his recent trip to Puerto Rico to announce the signing of super featherweight Luis Cruz, Top Rank's CEO, Bob Arum, said he reached a handshake agreement with Cotto on the Margarito rematch. Cotto is likely to sign a contract in the coming days which is probably going to earn him between $5-7 million dollars for the fight with a percentage of the pay-per-view revenue.
"With a simple handshake we made our agreement real and we hope that it happens. And I feel comfortable and quiet to avenge that defeat and then go up the ranks to see what's left for me boxing," Cotto added.
