BoxingScene.com's Lem Saterfield reported earlier this week that former welterweight champion Kermit Cintron will appear on the undercard to the Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito rematch that will most likely take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on July 16th.
The Puerto Rican boxer who fights at both welterweight and junior middleweight has not fought since a technical decision loss to Paul Williams this past May. Cintron advised BoxingScene that he will not look for a tune-up before the July fight. Instead of risking an injury in a tune-up bout, Cintron plans on having a longer than normal camp.
"I don't want to risk getting cut or an injury (in a tune up). I will have a long camp. Ronnie (Shields) will have me ready so I am not worried about ring rust," Cintron said.
While Cintron is planning a move back down to welterweight, he would love to face IBF junior middleweight champion Cornelius "K9" Bundrage on the Cotto-Margarito undercard.
"I see Bundrage on BoxingScene talking about wanting to fight Pacquiao, Mayweather, Canelo, Martinez, Hatton and De la Hoya. Those fights aren't possible. He needs to be realistic with who he is going to fight. A fight against me is a makeable fight. Beating a washed up Cory Spinks doesn't get him a shot at those other guys," Cintron said.
The fight makes sense for a number of reasons. Bundrage is promoted by Don King and King is one of the few promoters that Top Rank has worked with recently (for the Miguel Cotto-Ricardo Mayorga fight). Cintron is co-promoted by Lou DiBella and Top Rank. The winner of the potential clash would be on the short list to face the Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito winner. By being showcased on the undercard of that highly anticipated rematch, the Bundrage-Cintron winner will have increased their marketability. An all Puerto Rican showdown between Miguel Cotto and Kermit Cintron nearly took place last December but Cotto opted to rest his surgically repaired shoulder and face Mayorga in March instead.
