BoxingScene.com caught up with super bantamweight contender Chris Avalos (23-2) shortly after his three round beat down of Rolly Lunas. The fight took place on November 16th in Laughlin, NV on a "Solo Boxeo" UniMas card.
Avalos came out aggressive and punished Lunas from the opening round. Lunas proved to have a sturdy chin as he absorbed tremendous punishment but ultimately succumbed to the relentless assault in the third round.
"This one you know I just came out using my jab," Avalos said while explaining what lead to the knockout.
"I noticed that I came out kind of tense in the first round so I came out more relaxed in the second and third round. I noticed that when he was holding me, he would back up with his hand down so I told myself I was going to go with the left hook to the body and then to the head and that is when I caught him and knocked him down," he continued.
Avalos lost a controversial split decision to former IBF super bantamweight champion Jhonatan Romero on December 2nd, 2011. Avalos felt that he should have been awarded with the victory and said that Romero's loss to Kiko Martinez earlier this year was a form of karma.
"That happened to him because that title was mine and wasn't his to begin with. He wouldn't give me the rematch," Avalos stated.
Avalos is ranked #1 by the WBO and is very interested in the December 7th showdown between WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux and former champion Joseph Agbeko. Avalos wouldn't predict a winner but said that he is very interested in facing the winner.
"If it happens I am ready. I am already back in the gym. That fight is coming up but I am not going to give any judgement on it. I am ready for the winner. I am ready to fight for a world title. I hope I get my world title shot next," Avalos told BoxingScene.com.
