Carl Froch advanced to 28-1 (20 KOs) and marched into the final of the inaugural Super Six tournament with a majority decision over Glen Johnson, now 51-15-2 (35 early), in Atlantic City on Saturday night. Froch took some big right hands yet increased his own pace at key moments to take the decision by scores of 114-114, Nobuaki Uratani, 117-111, John Stewart, and 116-112 from Mark Green.
“I got caught with silly shots but stepped up when I had to. I didn’t really feel the shots but I did enough to win. I was switched on and sharp. Glen is a tough, strong veteran, a very strong man,” revealed Froch when speaking to John Rawlings of Sky Sports.
“I had said I would win every round as a bit of psychological warfare. I don’t know what the Japanese judge [Uratani] saw but the other two had it right. He landed some big right hands. I was in New York for two weeks sweating like a marathon runner and was very drawn and depleted. I didn’t feel as strong as I usually feel.”
“A lot of people thought Glen beat Chad Dawson, he knocked out Roy Jones Junior and I feel it was a very good performance,” insisted the 33-year-old.
The 6’ 1’’ slugger will now meet California’s Andre Ward, 27, in the tournament’s showpiece final. Nottingham’s finest believes that both he and ‘Son Of God’ have produced the Super Six’s best performances and deserve their berths.
“Andre is a gentleman, a good speaker and I’ve nothing but praise for him. We both started this competition and are meeting in the final. This guy is an Olympic gold medalist, it will be a great fight,” mused ‘The Cobra’ as he looked ahead to his curtain closer against the 24-0 (13) six-footer.
“I also want to dedicate this win to all the troops, English and America, who are out in places like Afghanistan. I’ve had a lot of support from the regiments. They are doing a tough job, that is the real fighting, and are doing fantastic,” declared the WBC super-middleweight champion, closing the book on his latest victory.
