Jose 'Chepo' Reynoso has been in the corner of Saul "Canelo" Alvarez for over 13 years and the coach of the Guadalajara fighter often celebrates his birthday around time period of Canelo's fights in May.
But this time it will fall exactly the day of the fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., which takes place on May 6 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
"It's my great birthday present. That day I'm going to turn 64, I hope Canelo will give me a big win and I'll be very happy," Reynoso told Eduard Cauich during the ongoing training camp in San Diego. "[I want] a win by knockout, for him to look spectacular."
Known for his good work with Alvarez inside and outside the ring, Chepo Reynoso has managed to polish the red-haired boxer into a disciplined, hard-working, and annihilating fighter.
For now, Don Chepo feels fortunate to be part of one of the most important fights in the recent history of Mexican boxing. Already, all of the T-Mobile Arena tickets have sold out and a great atmosphere is expected on the night of the fight.
"What I visualize, I see a T-Mobile Arena full of Mexicans, singing the national anthem. In the end we all have the Mexican spirit, it's going to be something special and unforgettable," Chepo said about the night of May 6. "They are two Mexicans in the world boxing cathedral, it's like we're saying that we can. Mexicans are here to write history."
"The most important thing is the triumph, a forceful triumph, a triumph that teaches everyone who is who in boxing. Let's hope that victory is very strong. Saul has known us since he was a child, we have known him since he was a child. His scope, his qualities, I think that's important when there is knowledge of both sides it's important, because there is a total understanding."
