The mandatory world title battle between Callum Smith and Anthony Dirrell (30-1-1, 24 KOs) could take place on a May date in Anfield, according to Smith's promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport.
The two boxers will collide for the vacant World Boxing Council [WBC] super middleweight world title.
Badou Jack vacated the title a few weeks ago, after fighting to a draw with IBF world champion James DeGale at the Barclays Center in New York City. After that fight, Jack let it known very quickly that he planned to over up the light heavyweight division.
Anthony's older brother, Andre Dirrell, believes he was robbed several years ago when face Carl Froch in Nottingham. Because of that outcome, Anthony Dirrell is a little reluctant to travel over toe the UK.
"I think that will go to purse bids," Hearn told Sky Sports. "Dirrell doesn't want to come to the UK, as his brother didn't. I don't think they are going to accept any offers. If we win the purse bid, they will come, they will have to come. We will wait and see on that I think. I would love Anfield. I would like to do it at Anfield."
Smith (22-0, 17 KOs), who was ringside for the Jack-DeGale battle, was hoping to face the winner. That desire got dashed away when Jack and DeGale fought to a draw. There has been some talk of Smith facing off with DeGale in a big showdown in the UK, but Hearn says the fight Direll is their top priority.
"We have gone a long way with the WBC," said Hearn. "People are talking about the DeGale fight for the IBF, but we have invested a huge amount of time with the WBC to get that position and he wants that belt, so his preference is to fight Anthony Dirrell."
