WBA junior welterweight champion Adrien Broner (31-2, 23KOs) was hoping to face Manny Pacquiao in April, but instead he will have to settle for Ashley Theophane (39-6-1, 11KOs) in early March.
Broner was recently approached by Pacquaio's adviser, Michael Koncz, to discuss the possibility of an HBO Pay-Per-View fight in April.
That fight was recently ruled out, after Pacquaio's promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank said Broner wasn't a worthy enough adversary to be in the ring with the Filipino superstar.
Pacquiao will instead face WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley in a trilogy bout, as announced by Arum.
If Pacquiao's team still wants him, Broner is ready. And if not, Broner has promised pain for Theophane.
The two fighters have been trading some words. Theophane is promoted by Broner's close friend, Floyd Mayweather Jr.
"I don’t give a f*** who I fight. If Manny Pacquiao wants to make this fight happen in April I’m ready and if that sh*t don’t go through then I will just beat the sh*t out of Floyd Mayweather fighter Ashley Theophane in the beginning of March," Broner told his followers.
Broner has been out of the ring since winning his world title on October 3rd with a twelfth round stoppage of Khabib Allakhverdiev. Theophane was last in action on September 12th as part of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Andre Berto undercard in Las Vegas. In of the non-televised fights at the MGM Grand, he won a lopsided ten round unanimous decision over Steve Chambers.
