Former WBO/WBA flyweight champion Brian Viloria aims to win and get himself in line for another title shot when he battles Mexico’s Jose Alfredo Zuniga at the plush Cotai Arena of the Venetian Resort Hotel and Casino in Macau on Saturday.
Well known Australian promoter Peter Maniatis reported from Macau that the 33 year old Viloria is looking to put on an impressive performance against Zuniga which he hopes will lead to another crack at the WBO/WBA belts he lost to Mexico’s Juan Francisco Estrada also at the Cotai Arena in Macau.
Maniatis quoted Viloria who said that he “still feels very young and still loves boxing” and now that he and wife Erika have a son it has really given him “extra motivation to keep going in my boxing career.”
Trainer Freddie Roach’s talented Filipino assistant Marvin Somodio told the Manila Standard that Viloria has been training hard and his “preparation for the fight has been very good and he is in great condition and ready.”
Viloria sparred with a number of talented fighters including Mexican super flyweight Ricardo Rodriguez who has a record of 9-1 with 3 knockouts with Somodio saying the sparring went very well.
In his first comeback fight after losing his titles to Juan Francisco Estrada by a split decision in Macau, the 33 year old Viloria showed a little ring rust but won a comfortable ten round decision over Juan Herrera to up his record to 33-4 with 19 knockouts.
Zuniga who is eight years younger than Viloria has a record of 11-5-1 with 5 knockouts and Maniatis reported that he “looks fit and tough and doesn’t seem fazed” despite Viloria’s record and reputation of having beaten such big names as Giovanni Segura, Omar Nino Romero and Hernan “Tyson” Marquez all by stoppage.
Zuniga who is coming off a loss on points in an Interimn light flyweight WBA title fight against Alberto Rossel said he is “very fit and ready for anything on Saturday night.”
