WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee (34-2-1, 24KOs) was scheduled to face his mandatory defense against Billy Joe Saunders. The fight got postponed, twice. There is no new date as of yet with Saunders, and Lee is already looking ahead at a unification fight.
On October 17th, WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (33-0, 30KOs) will face IBF king David Lemieux (34-2, 32KOs) in a unification. And then on November 21, WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto will defend his title against Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.
Lee sees Golovkin and Cotto as the favorites to win their upcoming matches, according to a recent interview with boxingnewsonline.net.
He doubts Cotto will face him, stating that the Puerto Rican star rejected a fight with him earlier this year. He does believe Golovkin will fight him, should he get past Lemieux in two months.
Of course that plan could be ruled over, because the WBC has ordered the Cotto-Canelo winner to face the winner of Golovkin-Lemieux.
There is also a fight in December which could set up a third option, as Danny Jacobs defends his WBA 'regular' middleweight title against Peter Quillin.
Lee and Quillin fought earlier this year to a draw, but it was a non-title contest due to Quillin's inability to make the weight limit of 160-pounds.
One of most talked about fantasy fights is a match between Golovkin and pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. at a catch-weight limit of 154-pounds. If the fight were to happen, Lee told Boxing News that he'd pick Golovkin to beat Mayweather.
