Polish light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara would not rule out the possibility of challenging WBO/IBF/WBA light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev - even if the fight takes place in Russia.
As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, Fonfara was a frontrunner to face WBC champion Adonis Stevenson on a date in June. The two sides were unable to agree on financial terms and are now looking at other possibilities.
Kovalev was in action in January, when he battered Jean Pascal in their rematch for a TKO win.
Fonfara was in the ring last fall and won a twelve round decision in a very exciting fight with former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly. Many experts called it a 'Fight of The Year' candidate.
Kovalev already has a fight booked for the fall with Andre Ward - if the unbeaten Olympian defeats Sullivan Barrera next Saturday night in Oakland.
Before the fight in the fall takes place, there has been discussion of Kovalev returning in the summer for a voluntary defense of his titles in Russia.
Fonfara is very game when it comes to fighting Kovalev, but he's never received any proposals for such a fight, at least for this year. Whether a deal can get done is the question. Fonfara is advised/managed by Al Haymon and Kovalev is promoted by Main Events, who do little to no business with Haymon.
"The fight with Stevenson is not going to take place [in June]," said Fonfara. " Right now I am in training camp and waiting to get information from my promoter. At this point, I don't have a specific date and we have no opponent. With respect to a fight with Kovalev in Russia, I would certainly like to see something like this take place. But so far we have not had any proposals."
The 28-year-old Fonfara has a record of 28 wins (16 by knockout) and three defeats. Kovalev is unbeaten with 29 wins (26 KOs).
