Rising featherweight Alberto Machado has been added to the ’Noche de Campeones’ card Saturday evening in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. The unbeaten prospect from San Juan will face Mexico’s Alvaro Ortiz in a scheduled eight-round bout.
Topping the bill, Orlando Cruz looks to make one more comeback, as he faces Mexico’s Sergio Villanueva. The super featherweight contest marks the first fight back for Cruz since a points loss to fellow islander Gamalier Rodriguez last April, which came on the heels of his title fight knockout loss to Orlando Salido some six months prior.
Machado (10-0, 8KOs)—who fights for Miguel Cotto Promotions, named after the reigning middleweight king—makes his fourth straight appearance in Puerto Rico. His last fight came in March, gaining exposure in Cotto's Boxeo Al Maximo series.
Ortiz (7-2-1, 5KOs) fights outside of Mexico for the first time in his young career.
“We are very pleased to have our prospect Alberto Machado in Mayaguez and making a co-promotion with Javier Bustillo and his company Universal Promotions on this event. We know it will be a great event and a very important fight. Machado has a big challenge on the tough Alvaro Ortiz,” said Hector Soto vice president and promoter for Miguel Cotto Promotions.
The show will be distributed by DirecTV.
