WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson has confirmed BoxingScene.com's report from May 16th.
The Canadian superstar will make the seventh defense of his world title when he returns to the ring on July 16th against once beaten Thomas Williams Jr.
The bout is scheduled to take place at a yet-to-be-disclosed location in Quebec, Canada. It has not been revealed if Fox or Showtime will televised the fight. Both networks are set to showcases boxing on that date,
It is unclear as to which network will air the bout as this goes to publish, as all parties involved declined official comment until an official announcement is ready to be made.
Stevenson (29-1, 22KOs) has been riding a world title run since knocking out Chad Dawson in a single round in June of 13. He's been out of the ring since a third round stoppage of Tommy Karpency last September.
The event is reportedly going to be a doubleheader used to build a showdown between Stevenson and his mandatory challenger Eleider Alvarez. Both men are promoted Yvon Michel's GYM Promotions and advised by Al Haymon. Alvarez (19-0, 10KOs) won a twelve round decision over Isaac Chilemba last November to secure the mandatory position, but wants another interim-fight to prepare himself.
Alvarez's opponent is potentially going to be Chad Dawson.
Williams Jr. (20-1, 14KOs) is coming off back-to-back shootouts. Last November he got off the deck in the first round to knock Humberto Savigne out in the second. A very similar situation earlier this year with Edwin Rodriguez, who Williams stopped in the second round of action in style. He feels confident of knocking out Stevenson in similar fashion.
