Famous German coach Ulli Wegner was very disappointed with David Haye's performance in the recent fight with Wladimir Klitschko, who won an easy twelve round decision last Saturday in Hamburg. Wegner told Sportal that Haye lacked the necessary courage to win the fight and he also lacked a proper strategy to defeat the much bigger Klitschko. He even compared the bout to Arthur Abraham's recent one-sided loss to Andre Ward. Wegner trains Abraham.
"Haye had to show more courage. He boxed timidly, and Klitschko won. Haye showed good reflexes, but he had to do more. I never thought that he would sell his skin so cheaply. He was sparring with [Robert] Helenius and he looked explosive and quick, and he could have used more of that. I feel like I was tricked. This battle can be compared with the last fight of Arthur Abraham. Haye showed good reflexes, and Arthur in his fight with Ward showed a good defense - but both didn't do enough," Wegner said.
"Haye needed to land a couple of good shots to Klitschko's head at mid-range, but Haye showed too much respect for his opponent. If he would have boxed more on the inside and in the middle, and used his mobility, he would have achieved something. What's was [Haye's] tactics? If you are only looking not to get hit, then what kind of tactics are we talking about. You can't win. Haye needed to be explosive but you need the necessary courage. I would have been ashamed to [disclose the toe injury]. He should have said that he had a headache."
