BoxingScene.com posted a story on Saturday night regarding the possibility of a rematch between former champions Abner Mares and Jhonny Gonzalez on a March date. There are ongoing discussions between Gonzalez's promoter Osvaldo Kuchle and Mares' manager, Al Haymon.
Mares (29-2-1, 15KOs) was knocked out by Gonzalez in the first round in August 2013. It was the first career loss for Mares, who came in as a big favorite to win. Mares exercised a rematch clause and they had planned to fight in February 2014. It never happened when Mares withdrew with an injury from sparring.
While Mares confirms that getting revenge on Gonzalez is one of his goals for this year, he would also fight WBA featherweight champion Jesus Cuellar or IBF featherweight champion Lee Selby. Both Cuellar and Selby are also managed by Haymon.
"The only thing I did was talk to Al Haymon and provide him with my goals, and one of them is Jhonny Gonzalez. I am in the featherweight division and I do want to fight him, the second [goal] would be Jesus Cuellar, because I want to become champion again, and the third is Lee Selby who is also a world champion," Mares told ESPN Deportes. "I intend to do three fights this year. I feel a lot of energy, a lot of motivation and I want to be champion."
Mares last fought in August, when he suffered a twelve round majority decision loss to California rival Leo Santa Cruz.
