Abner Mares (23-0-1, 13 KO's) and Eric Morel (46-2, 23 KO's) are a month away from their high-stakes battle for the vacant World Boxing Council title at 122-pounds.
"I am very excited about this new opportunity to be champion of the world. I'd rather be in this division where the best fights are [located]. I know that winning [this fight] can bring a lot of good things. Fighting at super bantamweight will not be anything new. My first professional matches were made at this weight, so I won't be giving away any advantage," sair Mares, who faces Morel on April 21st in El Paso, Texas.
"I see myself getting a great victory, and I want to knock him out. I hope to get it because a knockout always makes you look much better, but considering that he is a opponent - the fight could go the distance."
While Mares respects Morel's ability, he sees several items in his style that he could exploit in their Showtime televised fight at the Don Haskins Center.
"Morel is a good fighter, but he hasn't faced a strong, high caliber opponent in some time and that is what we want to take advantage of, to make him feel uncomfortable, to make him fight, which is something that is surely going to make him feel strange," Mares said.
